CAMHS Classroom in Bolton


The school on the CAMHS Day unit at Royal Bolton hospital is provided to support the treatment and assessment of children with mental health difficulties through teaching and learning in an educational provision.


  • To provide a safe, secure and familiar setting for vulnerable children and young people to learn in.
  • To create an environment that represents the pupil's education, interests and emotional well-being.
  • To provide continuity and progression in an education provision for children and young people admitted onto the day unit.

Teaching staff are fully integrated members of the CAMHS team.

At the end of each school day, teaching staff will handover information about each pupil to the nursing staff.


Monday / Tuesday - Secondary aged, Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils. There will be 6/7 pupils maximum from ages 11-16.

Friday - Primary aged, Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils. There will be 6/7 pupils maximum from ages 4-11.

KS3, Years 7,8,9 - After initial school assessments and contact with the mainstream school, differentiated work will be provided for each young person by teaching staff on the Day Unit in maths, english and art.

KS4, Years 10,11 - Work from the mainstream school will be studied in any subject area to ensure GCSE/BTec work or revision is up to date.

KS 1/2, Reception to Year 6 - Differentiated topic or numeracy work is taught to the children. KS1 and 2 will be split within the classroom to ensure differentiation further.

Links with mainstream school or main school provider.

Teaching staff liase closely with the main school provider to;

  • Inform them of the child, young person's attendance.
  • Arrange a school observation for primary aged pupils.
  • Ask for information about the functioning of the child/ young person in their school setting including academic ability, behaviour, relationships with staff and peers, attendance and any difficulties being experienced by the child.
  • Gather work for the KS4 pupils to enable them to continue with their GCSE/BTec studies.
  • Support pupils back into school after a prolonged absence.

Charity Work

We raise money each year by making and selling cakes around the hospital site for Children in Need, Red nose Day and Sports Aid.

Anti-bullying week, Holocaust Memorial Day, World Book Day - other cultural events as they occur e.g. Jubilee, Olympics etc.

We take the primary children to the Panto each year.
